So Much Depends

So much depends
on the way the winds blow
how fast we reach our goals
and which way our story goes.

So much depends
on the way the currents flow
how hard we have to swim
to reach the sunset’s glow.

So much depends
on the weather here today
if warm the sunshine feels
or if it’s cold and grey.

So much depends
on how open your heart is,
how genuine your smile
and how truthfully you kiss.

This poem was inspired by Poetry Jam’s Flavour of the week, where the prompt was ‘so much depends upon’. I just let my words take it from there.

I especially liked “so much depends on the current’s flow, how hard we have to swim…” I think that’s very true. And I like it that you didn’t link whether we reach our goals to how hard we have to swim, though strong contrary currents sure make it harder. I’ll carry your poem with me today and swim harder.

I think the second and fourth stanzas had me. It’s all a choice on our part to push harder and remain genuine.

Interesting pattern of rhymes and repetitions in this one. There is lots of meaning here and I saw new possibilities each time I read it over! So far it seems everyone has written more or less about how little control we actually have in life–something I did not think about immediately when I decided on this prompt. Thanks for posting.
